Have you ever experienced deep disappointment that quickly turned into resentment and anger? It’s a common reaction when plans fall through or someone lets us down. The process starts with feeling let down, which fuels thoughts of blame and frustration towards others. These thoughts escalate, intensifying our emotions into anger and eventually settling into lingering resentment. However, stepping back and seeing the situation clearly can change everything. Often, like waking from a bad dream, reality reveals that things weren’t as they seemed—perhaps the other person was unwell, and it wasn’t their fault.
Today, I encountered such a situation myself. Early in the morning, just before meeting a friend, I received a text canceling our plans due to her not feeling well. Instantly, I felt a surge of disappointment, accompanied by strong emotional reactions. My mind raced with imagined scenarios of missed opportunities, deepening my disappointment and fueling thoughts and feelings of anger towards my friend. Recognizing this downward spiral, I knew I had to intervene before it consumed my day.
I wanted to help my friend feel better by sending distant energy healing, but realized my own negative emotions could interfere. So, instead, I focused inward, paying attention to my breathing and the physical sensations of disappointment and anger. Despite the persistent urge to get pulled back into thoughts and dwell on the situation, I gently redirected my attention back to the felt sense in my body. Gradually, after about 10 minutes of mindful acceptance of my body sensations, I felt a shift. I was able to accept the change in plans and even sent healing energy to my friend.
This experience reminded me of a phrase my friend often says: “Everything’s always working out.” It became clear that while our plans had changed, there was a silver lining—an opportunity for a new, perhaps even better adventure in the future.
Transforming disappointment into acceptance and finding excitement in new possibilities is a process.
