Are you struggling to make lasting changes in your life? You start with great intentions—setting goals, moving in the right direction—only to quickly feel overwhelmed, stuck, or defeated. You might even give up before you’ve really gotten started, especially when things feel too hard or you’re emotionally triggered by setbacks.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I recently went for a walk in the forest, and as I was walking, the weather was constantly changing—first pouring rain, then bright blue skies, and now, strong winds. In fact, just a short while ago, I heard a tree snap and fall, which made me realize something about change and how we often resist it.
The nature of change, both in the environment and within ourselves, is unpredictable. Like the weather, life’s changes can be sudden and intense. One minute things are calm, and the next, we’re hit with overwhelming emotions or challenges. If we’re not grounded, it can feel like we’re being uprooted by the winds of change.
So, how can we deal with these changes? How can we handle the emotional turbulence and continue moving forward, even when it feels overwhelming? The key is learning to embrace change and develop the right mindset to manage it.
Understanding the Nature of Change
Change is a constant part of life. In the natural world, trees can bend with the wind, or they can snap and break if they are too stiff and resistant to bending. The same principle applies to us. If we aren’t grounded—if we’re not in touch with our body, emotions, and the present moment—we can easily become overwhelmed and give up when things get tough.
When we make big changes or try to push past our comfort zone, we often encounter challenges that trigger emotional responses. These emotions might feel overwhelming, and we can be tempted to retreat or give up entirely. But just like trees must weather storms, we must learn to bend with life’s challenges and keep moving forward, otherwise we will breakdown or become uprooted.
How to Manage Change and Avoid Emotional Burnout
If you want to make meaningful change, you need to practice being with what you feel. Rather than avoiding or suppressing emotions, try to develop a relationship with them. This will help you stay grounded and better equipped to handle difficult feelings when they arise.
Here are some practical tips to help you stay emotionally grounded as you make changes in your life:
• Practice mindfulness: Start with a simple breathing exercise or meditation that focuses on the sensations in your body. This will help you become practiced and more aware of your emotions and learn how to sit with them, rather than reacting impulsively.
• Breathe through the discomfort: When you feel triggered or overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths. This can help calm your nervous system and reduce the emotional charge.
• Embrace small changes: Don’t try to make huge changes all at once. Focus on small, manageable steps. This can help prevent you from feeling too overwhelmed.
• Be gentle with yourself: It’s normal to feel discomfort during times of change. Practice self-compassion and allow yourself to feel whatever emotions come up without judgment.
• Stay consistent: Practice being with your feelings every day, even when things feel “okay.” This way, you’ll build emotional resilience over time, making it easier to navigate more challenging moments when they come.
The more you practice, the better equipped you’ll be to handle the changes that arise in life. Remember, change requires change—if you want to shift your life, you need to be open to shifting your mindset and emotional responses.
