One of the things I’ve noticed about anxiety is how much it drains our energy. Anxiety runs at a high intensity, but instead of fueling us, it pulls us into constant worry, fear, and the belief that life isn’t safe. Even when nothing is actually wrong, it can feel like something is.

This state is tied to the body’s fight-or-flight response. When our subconscious perceives danger, it keeps us hyper-alert—constantly scanning for threats. This drains our energy as adrenaline and cortisol surge through our system. But often the “danger” isn’t real; it’s a perception.

When anxiety has us stuck in this cycle, we disconnect from life. It’s like unplugging a lamp—the light won’t shine, no matter how much power is available.

The Shift from Anxiety to Excitement

Interestingly, brainwave studies show that anxiety and excitement look almost identical. The difference is in perception. When we interpret that nervous energy as danger, it triggers fight-or-flight. But when we reinterpret it as excitement, it energizes us.

By challenging the belief that “life isn’t safe” and grounding ourselves in the present, we can shift out of fear. Look around and ask: Am I actually safe right now? More often than not, the answer is yes. This helps calm the body, turn off the fight-or-flight response, and re-engage the parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, recover).

That’s when the “lamp” plugs back into life—our energy rises, and we feel more present, enthusiastic, and authentic.

Practical Tips to Break Free from Anxiety

Here are some simple practices to help shift anxiety into calm presence:

• Challenge anxious perceptions – Ask yourself: Is there really danger right now, or is this a thought pattern?

• Check your environment – Look around and confirm: I am safe in this moment.

• Breathe consciously – Slow, steady breaths calm the nervous system and help bring you back to balance.

• Question your focus – Are you fueling anxiety by watching news or dwelling on negativity? Redirect attention to what’s real in front of you.

• Reframe nervousness as excitement – Notice how similar the feelings are. Choose to lean into the positive side of the energy.

• Practice presence – Stay grounded in your body and environment instead of chasing “what ifs” in your head.

With consistent practice, you’ll find that anxiety loses its grip. Even if it arises, you’ll be able to breathe through it, shift perceptions, and reconnect to life’s flow.
