Anxiety and Disconnection from Self

Anxiety often stems from being disconnected from who we truly are. This disconnection happens when we live behind a mask—trying to fit in, worrying about what others think, or proving ourselves because deep down we don’t feel good enough.

Instead of being present with our real feelings, we try to become something other than what we are. Over time, this constant effort pulls us further away from ourselves and fuels anxiety.

Where Disconnection Begins

If we weren’t supported to be ourselves growing up—encouraged in our interests, allowed to feel sadness, joy, or excitement without judgment—we learned that who we are wasn’t fully accepted.

Instead, we may have been told:

•How we “should” feel (or not feel).

•Who we “should” be (or not be).

•That we were a disappointment for simply being ourselves.

This lack of support creates the belief that it isn’t safe to be who we are. We adapt by hiding behind masks, striving to meet unrealistic expectations, and repressing our true selves. The result? A deep sense of insecurity, a lack of confidence, and anxiety that follows us everywhere.

Reconnecting to Yourself Through Awareness

Healing begins by practicing awareness and reconnecting with your body. Anxiety lessens as you get used to being with what you feel—breathing, noticing sensations, and allowing emotions instead of pushing them away.

Daily mindfulness practice helps rebuild a sense of self, grounded in who you really are, not in how others see you. Over time, this cultivates true inner confidence and resilience.

Practical Tips to Break the Cycle of People-Pleasing and Anxiety

• Create daily space for awareness – Sit quietly, breathe deeply, and notice your body’s sensations.

• Allow emotions without judgment – Practice accepting sadness, joy, or fear without trying to change them.

• Notice when you wear a mask – Ask yourself if you’re acting from authenticity or from fear of rejection.

• Challenge people-pleasing habits – Remind yourself that your worth isn’t defined by meeting others’ expectations.

• Build confidence through presence – The more time you spend with your real feelings, the stronger your inner self becomes.
