Are You Hard on Yourself When You Make a Mistake?

A Personal Experience with “Mistakes” That Led to Success

I recently had two experiences that reminded me how unexpected outcomes can actually work in our favor.

The first involved my new Ninja Creami ice cream maker. I was experimenting with homemade ice cream and struggling to make it smooth and creamy. My mixture kept icing up instead of blending properly. I researched it and learned I needed an emulsifier to help everything bind together the way I wanted. While common options like guar gum work, I wanted a healthier alternative.

I decided to try oat flour, thinking it might thicken the mixture in a natural way. Initially, it didn’t work as expected. But later, while cooking oatmeal with blended cashews, I accidentally overheated it—and something amazing happened! It thickened into a rich, pudding-like texture. I realized that when oats are heated properly, they create a natural emulsifier. When I applied a little bit of this that heated way into my ice cream, it worked just as well as guar gum!

The second experience involved cooking sweet potatoes. I was slowly simmering them in a pan but left them on for too long. When I came back, I thought I had burned them—they had darkened significantly. But instead of being ruined, something unexpected happened: they caramelized! This process intensified their sweetness, creating a deeper, richer flavor—similar to how onions caramelize when cooked slowly.

Both of these experiences were seemingly mistakes, but in reality, they led me to discover better ways of doing things.

The Power of Perspective: Mistakes as Learning Experiences

We often view mistakes as failures, but in reality, they are some of our greatest teachers. Every time something doesn’t go as planned, we have an opportunity to:

Discover a new approach that works even better than expected.
Learn what not to do—just like touching a hot stove teaches you to be cautious.
Strengthen problem-solving skills, as challenges encourage creative thinking.
Build resilience and confidence, knowing that setbacks don’t define your success.

Reframing Mistakes: A Mindfulness-Based Approach

Instead of asking “What did I lose?”, ask “What did I learn?”. This simple shift in mindset can transform self-judgment into self-growth.

Here are some mindful ways to reframe mistakes in your life:

???? Pause and reflect – What unexpected insight or skill did you gain?
???? Drop the word “mistake” – Instead, call it an experiment or learning experience.
???? Stay curious – What can this experience teach you about yourself or the situation?
???? Let go of perfectionism – Growth happens through trial and error.
???? Celebrate progress – Each “mistake” moves you closer to where you want to be.
