Hi, I’m Arne Pedersen from Hypnotherapy Victoria, and welcome to this video series on anxiety. In this series, we explore what anxiety is, where it comes from, how it affects our lives, and what practical steps we can take to move through it and heal.

Today, I want to focus on a fundamental source of anxiety: what happens when we hide our true feelings and people-please instead of expressing ourselves authentically.

How Hiding Your Emotions Creates Anxiety

Anxiety often arises when we reject our emotional experiences. When we push away feelings or try to shape ourselves to fit other people’s expectations, we disrupt the natural flow of our emotions.

Think of your emotions as a river:

•A river flows naturally, winding around obstacles and moving gently most of the time.

•When heavy rain falls, the water rises, turbulence increases, and eventually the river can overflow if it is blocked or dammed.

Similarly, when we suppress emotions—denying our true feelings or constantly adjusting to please others—our emotional “river” becomes dammed. Over time, the pressure builds:

•Repressed emotions accumulate beneath the surface.

•Anxiety emerges as the natural energy of these emotions struggles to flow.

•Our body may show signs of stress or ill health as this energy is blocked.

No matter how much we try to ignore it, just like a river cannot be stopped, these emotions will find a way to surface. This is often experienced as panic attacks, overwhelm, or chronic anxiety.

Signs You Might Be People-Pleasing and Fueling Your Anxiety

Ask yourself these questions honestly:

•Am I adjusting my behavior to meet other people’s expectations?

•Am I ignoring my own needs or feelings to avoid conflict or rejection?

•Do I say “yes” when I really feel “no,” or vice versa?

•Do I compromise my boundaries or avoid speaking my truth?

•Am I arranging my life around fear instead of what I truly want?

If you answered “yes” to any of these, you may be pushing down emotions that naturally want to be expressed, contributing to anxiety in your life.

Practical Steps to Start Releasing Anxiety

The good news is that you can begin processing these emotions and reducing anxiety by becoming present and authentic in your daily life. Here are some steps to help:

• Start an awareness practice – notice your breathing, your body, and the sensations in the present moment.

• Daily meditation – even 10–15 minutes each morning at the same time helps build emotional awareness and self-acceptance.

• Grounding exercises – feel your feet on the ground, notice your surroundings, and reconnect with your body.

• Honest reflection – make a list of where you compromise yourself, people-please, or suppress emotions.

• Express yourself safely – speak your truth, set boundaries, and honor your feelings as they arise.

By practicing this regularly, you begin to allow emotions to flow naturally, rather than building up and causing overwhelm. Over time, you’ll feel more in control of your anxiety, more aligned with yourself, and less at the mercy of stress.
