Anxiety is something I’ll be exploring deeply in a series of posts and videos because it’s not just a surface-level issue. It’s a lived experience, and often, a misunderstood one. Many people say, “I have anxiety,” and over time, it becomes part of their identity—something they think they simply have to live with.

But I don’t believe anxiety is a life sentence. It’s not just something you “have.” It’s a learned way of being—a byproduct of how we’ve experienced life, especially in our early years.

Where Does Anxiety Really Come From?

Most anxiety is rooted in emotional suppression. If we weren’t supported to be ourselves as children—told not to cry, not to feel too much, or that we were too sensitive—those messages accumulate. We’re taught to push our feelings away instead of feeling them, and we begin to believe something is wrong with us for even having those feelings.

Often, our caregivers were doing the best they could. But if they themselves didn’t know how to be with emotions, they taught us to override ours—“Just tough it out.” Over time, we learned to:

  • Hide what we feel

  • Reject our own emotional experience

  • Shape ourselves into someone we think will be accepted

And that’s where people-pleasing often begins. We try to avoid rocking the boat. We seek approval. We worry about being disliked. We conform to expectations and lose touch with who we really are.

So What Is Anxiety, Really?

It’s not just mental. Anxiety is:

  • The repression of emotion: All the feelings we’ve never expressed are still inside us.

  • A nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight: Our sympathetic system stays activated, keeping us on edge.

  • Disconnection from self: We don’t feel safe being who we truly are.

  • Cellular and emotional memory: Our body remembers, even when our mind tries to move on.

And when your real self is constantly pushed down, it tries to come up—it wants to be lived. That internal conflict becomes anxiety.

What Anxiety Can Feel Like:

  • A persistent sense of danger or worry, even when nothing is wrong

  • Tension in the chest, shortness of breath

  • Shakiness, sweaty palms

  • Feeling ungrounded or “not right”

  • Avoiding social settings or new experiences

  • Doubting your abilities or never feeling “good enough,” even after successes

Over time, these patterns become habitual—mental, emotional, and physical. Our self-talk turns negative. Our muscles hold tension. We brace against life.

Healing Anxiety Starts with Understanding

Anxiety is not the core of who you are. It’s the result of learned disconnection.

By slowly returning to your authentic self, you can begin to shift:

  • Create safety in your nervous system

  • Practice being with your emotions rather than running from them

  • Eat nourishing foods that support balance

  • Speak your truth and reconnect with your inner voice

  • Build healthy boundaries and self-compassion

  • Let go of perfectionism and unrealistic expectations

And with time, these habits begin to unwind the tight grip of anxiety.

Helpful Tips to Begin Shifting Out of Anxiety:

  • Notice when you’re people-pleasing: Ask yourself, “Is this really what I want, or am I trying to be accepted?”

  • Pause and breathe: Take 2 minutes daily to slow down and reconnect with your body.

  • Acknowledge your emotions: Say to yourself, “It’s okay to feel this.” This builds emotional safety.

  • Speak your truth gently: Practice expressing your needs, even in small ways.

  • Give yourself permission to change slowly: Healing isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence.

  • Understand that you are not broken: Anxiety is something you learned, and it can be unlearned.
