This is video seven in the ADHD series, and I’m going to conclude this series for now and move on to the next topic after this.
Today I want to finish with the main emphasis of all the videos in the ADHD series.
When we’re not present, we really don’t have any say in our life.
Our attention is being distracted by our subconscious mind, by the programs running in our subconscious mind, and by our belief systems. These programs are meant to operate when we’re not paying attention.
The Subconscious Mind and Automatic Patterns
When we’re driving our car, talking to a friend, and our attention is elsewhere, something interesting can happen.
All of a sudden, we get to where we’re going and realize we don’t remember the last half hour of driving.
How did we even get here?
It can feel strange for a moment, but our subconscious mind has the programs of driving because we’ve done it so many times. These patterns are stored in our long-term memory.
So when our attention is distracted, our subconscious runs those programs automatically.
How This Relates to ADHD
With ADHD, we’re really off elsewhere a lot.
We’re distracted away from the present moment more often. And when that happens, our subconscious runs the programs—our behaviours—based on the habits that are already there.
If those habits are really supportive and you’re happy with your life, then that works well.
But if those habits are affecting you in ways that don’t feel good, then it becomes a challenge.
And if you’re watching this, chances are distraction is affecting you in ways that are not supporting you.
Your Power Is in the Present Moment
The more you do the awareness practice, the more you practice being present, and the more you come back to your physical sensations in your body, the less ADHD can affect you.
Over time, ADHD can begin to fade in its impact.
You move from just coping and getting through life… to actually thriving.
You begin to:
•Come back to your body over and over throughout the day
•Be present with what you feel
•Stay with what is happening in the moment
•Respond to life instead of reacting automatically
Learning to Return to the Present
This is something you practice continuously.
Coming back to your body.
Feeling your physical sensations.
Being present with what is happening right now.
And sometimes this is really hard to do on your own.
That’s completely okay. We’ve all needed help at different times in our lives.
