Do you ever feel drained from other people’s energy, certain situations, being out in public, or simply being around particular people?

You might be feeling perfectly fine, and then you spend time around someone and suddenly feel like your energy has been sucked out of you. You feel negative, unsettled, or simply don’t feel like yourself anymore.

Other times, the opposite happens. You spend time with someone and come away feeling better. Your energy feels uplifted.

Why does this happen? And more importantly, how can we become less affected by the negative interactions while allowing ourselves to remain open to the positive ones?

Understanding How Other People Affect Your Energy

This is what we’re going to explore throughout my Positive Energy Protection series.

There are many different ways our energy can be affected. You might come home from work and find that you simply can’t let the day go. You bring that energy home with you. Or perhaps you have a difficult interaction with someone and continue thinking about it afterward, replaying the conversation over and over in your mind.

An important part of positive energy protection is learning what we can do before, during, and after these interactions.

Beforehand, how can we prepare ourselves and our energy for the situation we’re going into?

During the interaction, how can we maintain our energy and feel good without becoming drained or pulled into someone else’s emotional state?

And afterward, how can we create a healthy boundary, complete the experience, let it go, and move on without carrying that person’s energy—or the energy of the situation—with us?

Learning how to do this can make a significant difference in how we experience our everyday lives.

Strengthening Your Inner Energy

It is really helpful in life to understand our own inner energy and what makes it stronger or more vulnerable.

Our levels of self-worth, self-esteem, and self-confidence can play an important role. When these are low, we can become much more easily affected by other people’s moods, opinions, reactions, and energy.

As we learn to become more comfortable being with our own feelings and emotions, we can strengthen our ability to remain ourselves around other people and in different situations. Instead of automatically becoming drained, we can begin to stay grounded—and sometimes even come away from an interaction feeling uplifted.

There is something very empowering about being able to enter a situation knowing that you can maintain your own sense of balance.

When Our Energy Becomes Vulnerable

Old negative self-beliefs, unresolved emotional experiences, anxiety, fears, and subconscious patterns can also make our energy more vulnerable.

When these patterns are already operating within us, an interaction with another person can easily trigger them. What feels like someone else’s energy affecting us may also be activating something that is already happening within ourselves.

Throughout this series, we’ll look more deeply at the subconscious mind and at how our energy can become drained or uplifted through our interactions with other people and different circumstances.

Simply beginning to understand how and why your energy is being affected can be an important first step toward changing it.

Learning to Protect Your Energy Without Blocking Life

One of the things we’re often told to do for energy protection is to imagine putting a bubble around ourselves to block other people’s energy.

But I don’t believe we necessarily want to block ourselves from life. When we put up a wall, we may also interfere with our ability to intuitively and emotionally connect with the world around us.

Our feelings and sensations are an important part of how we experience and relate to life.

So rather than trying to block everything out, we can learn how to keep our own energy strong and become clearer about where our energy ends and another person’s begins.

This can be particularly helpful if you’re very empathic or sensitive to other people’s emotions. The goal isn’t necessarily to stop sensing what another person is experiencing. It’s learning how to sense it without automatically taking it on as your own.

When we can’t distinguish between our own feelings and what we’re picking up from others, we can become drained without even understanding why. We may simply assume that everything we’re feeling belongs to us.

Learning to recognize that difference can give us much greater freedom in our relationships and everyday interactions.

A Practical Series You Can Apply in Everyday Life

I have created this Positive Energy Protection series almost like a small mini-course, taking you through the process step by step.

We’ll look at how your energy becomes affected, what you can do beforehand to prepare yourself and set your intentions, what you can do during an interaction if you notice yourself becoming drained, and how to let go afterward rather than carrying the experience with you.

These tools can also be helpful if you experience social anxiety or find yourself particularly affected by certain people or environments. I’m not suggesting that these practices will completely resolve every underlying issue, but if you understand them, practice them, and begin applying them in everyday life, you may notice a real difference.

The more you understand your own energy and how you respond to the world around you, the more empowered you can become in your interactions with other people.
