I want to bring a new perspective to healing chronic pain. My name is Arne Pedersen from Hypnotherapy Victoria.

I’ve experienced a lot of chronic pain starting maybe about 30 years ago. I had some issues in my back that I just couldn’t seem to resolve. I found a really good osteopath that I went to for quite a few years, and she would put my back back into the right position.

I had these muscle spasms that would pinch on the nerves and it was really painful. I had chronic pain non-stop for over 10 years. I had to start sleeping on my back when I had always slept on my side, and I could hardly sleep after that for a long time. There were a lot of things that I couldn’t do anymore.

It took a long time to understand that when I would go and have the physical worked on, my body would be put back to where it was and I would feel really good. But then in a day or so things would just go back to the same out-of-balance state, and my spine and muscles would start working against each other again and all the pain would come right back. I couldn’t understand why.

There’s a lot more than just the physical.

There is the emotional side of things, the mental side of things. Emotionally, we could have unresolved past experiences, low self-esteem, or low self-confidence. Mentally, if we’re always thinking in our head and disconnected from our body, our body doesn’t have the energy it needs to be in a calm, recuperative, regenerative state.

Our nervous system gets out of balance.

If we have belief systems where we don’t feel worthy, or we don’t feel good about ourselves, or there’s unresolved trauma, these can affect us deeply on a subconscious level. There’s so much more beyond the physical that we really need to address.

Once I started to address those things, and started to feel better about myself, and started changing my thought patterns and the way I looked at things, my body started to go into a state of ease more and more.

I moved from feeling like life was not safe to be me, into feeling like it was a safe and supportive world. I started to feel better about myself, and my body began to heal.

My nervous system started to shift into the parasympathetic state — rest, digest, recuperate, regenerate.

I started to sleep better again. My digestion improved. Before that, I was so stressed when I was in pain.

And it wasn’t just the physical pain.

The physical pain was more of a manifestation of how I felt about myself, and the fear that was going on inside of me — including panic attacks and anxiety.

If you’re not getting results physically, it can be a really good time to start looking beyond the physical.

That’s what this series is about.

We’re going to look at many different levels — starting with root causes and the subconscious mind, then moving into changing thought patterns and how we see ourselves and our life.

We’ll look at where we may not be speaking up for ourselves, where we’re not expressing our truth, or where we may feel stuck in situations that don’t feel good.

We’ll also look at whether we’re actually relaxed and calm, or if we’re living in a constant state of fight or flight.

Because the body does not heal in fight or flight.

The sympathetic nervous system — that stress response — is not where healing happens.

Healing happens in the parasympathetic nervous system — when the body feels safe, relaxed, and supported.

If we are always stressed, the body can’t properly repair.

But when we begin to feel calm, safe, and more confident in ourselves, we bring the body into a state that supports healing. And it’s amazing how healing can begin to happen more naturally.

When you combine that with good physical support, and emotional support, real change can begin.
