Welcome to Video #3 in the Positive Energy Protection series.
In the last video, I introduced the idea that we can feel another person’s emotional energy through resonance. Today, I want to go a little deeper into why this happens and what is actually taking place when we suddenly stop feeling like ourselves.
Have you ever been feeling perfectly fine, then walked into a crowded store, been around a particular person, or entered a busy environment and suddenly noticed yourself feeling anxious, heavy, or emotionally drained?
An important part of this experience is the noticing itself. Once we become aware that we don’t feel good, our attention naturally begins focusing on that feeling. We start thinking about it, judging it, and often the feeling becomes even stronger.
Tuning Into Someone Else’s Frequency
A simple way to understand this is to think about a radio.
Countless radio frequencies are being broadcast around us all the time, but we only hear the station we’ve tuned into. In a similar way, we may begin the day feeling calm and grounded, then unconsciously “tune” into the emotional frequency of another person, a crowd, or even our own interpretation of a situation.
It isn’t usually intentional. Something triggers us, our attention locks onto that emotional frequency, and before we realize it, we’ve changed our own emotional station.
This is why becoming aware of where your attention is tuning is one of the first steps in protecting your energy.
How We Can Become Entrained With Other People’s Energy
This connects with the tuning-fork example from the previous video. If you place two tuning forks of the same frequency near each other and strike one, the second can begin vibrating as well. They recognize and resonate with the same frequency.
We have the capacity within us to experience a full range of emotions, from sadness, grief, and depression through to love, joy, and bliss. When someone around us is experiencing sadness, for example, that emotional state may resonate with our own capacity for sadness.
We can then begin to entrain with that emotional state. We notice the feeling, focus on it, decide we don’t like it, and without realizing it, we begin tuning ourselves further into that frequency.
The goal isn’t necessarily to stop noticing another person’s energy. We want to become strong enough in our own emotional “preset” that we can notice what someone else is feeling without being pulled away from ourselves and becoming stuck there.
What We Focus On Can Affect Our Energy
Many things can make us more vulnerable to being pulled into another emotional state. We may already be low on energy, lacking confidence, or the person may remind us of someone or something that has upset us in the past.
When something triggers us, our attention can become focused on exactly what we don’t like. But by continually focusing on it, we can actually keep ourselves connected to that emotional state.
This is why awareness is so important. Instead of immediately becoming caught up in “I don’t like this feeling,” we can begin simply noticing what is happening without automatically judging it.
We can recognize the energy or emotion without making it the station we stay tuned into.
How Your Perception Affects Your Energy
You can see this in everyday situations such as driving in traffic.
On a day when you’re impatient and frustrated, every red light, slow driver, or traffic jam can seem like another problem. Your attention becomes increasingly focused on what isn’t going the way you want, and you may become more irritated as you go.
But on another day, you might encounter the same traffic while feeling calm and accepting. The circumstances may not be very different, but your experience of them is.
The same applies to interactions with other people. It isn’t only what someone says or does that affects us—it is also how we perceive and respond to what is happening.
When we notice ourselves becoming triggered, we can bring our awareness back to the present moment rather than immediately judging the experience. This gives us an opportunity to respond consciously instead of automatically being pulled into a lower emotional state.
Staying Present Helps You Hold Your Own Energy
One of the most helpful things you can begin practising is simply being present with what you feel in your body.
When an uncomfortable feeling comes up, we often immediately move into thoughts and judgments about it: I don’t like this. Why am I feeling this way? This person is making me feel terrible.
Instead, notice the feeling without immediately reacting to it. Feel your body, breathe, and stay connected to the present moment.
The more present you become, the easier it is to notice when you’re being pulled away from yourself and consciously guide yourself back toward a calmer, more grounded state.
This becomes an important foundation for the practical energy-management tools we’ll explore later in this series.
