Are you needing some tools to keep yourself from taking on negative energy from other people? Maybe you get drained at work from being around certain people, or some people just really affect you.

Perhaps you have trouble leaving work at work. You take things home in your mind, feel overwhelmed by everything going around in your head, or have trouble sleeping because you can’t stop thinking about it. You may simply feel exhausted and drained of your energy.

In this Positive Energy Protection series, we’re getting into the nuts and bolts of what we can do before, during, and after interactions with other people or challenging circumstances to help keep our energy strong.

In the previous video, we looked at clearing your inner energy before moving into something new. The idea is to make sure you’re not carrying the baggage from what you were doing before into the next part of your day.

Once you’ve cleared that suitcase out, you’re ready to move forward.

Set an Intention Before You Step Into the Situation

Before going into an interaction or situation, get very clear about what you are moving forward into.

Set an intention.

It could be going into work, spending time with a friend, attending an event or concert, going somewhere with lots of people, having a job interview, taking a driving test, giving a speech or doing some public speaking.

If social situations affect you strongly or you experience social anxiety, this can be particularly helpful.

You’ve already cleared your energy and let go of what you were doing before. Now ask yourself:

What am I moving into?

How do I want to feel?

What kind of person do I want to be in this situation?

What areas might challenge me?

Are there certain people I find particularly challenging?

Then imagine the situation going well.

Imagine How You Want the Experience to Feel

If you’re going into work, imagine a good day where everything flows.

If you’re giving a speech, see yourself giving the speech and then imagine yourself afterwards thinking, “Wow, that felt really good.”

If you’re going into a job interview, imagine yourself doing the interview. If you’re meeting a friend, see yourself spending time with them.

See yourself smiling, flowing and filled with light energy.

Sometimes it can be difficult to imagine the actual situation going well. If that happens, start with the feeling you want to have afterwards.

Imagine yourself thinking:

“That felt really good.”

If even that is difficult, remember another experience from your life that went well. Maybe you did something that challenged you and you were reluctant or nervous beforehand, but afterwards it turned out really well and you felt good about yourself.

Remember that experience and go into that feeling.

Then bring that feeling into the situation you are about to enter.

This article is part of my Positive Energy Protection series, where I explore why we can feel drained or affected by other people and practical ways to work with our energy before, during and after interactions. The complete series brings these different tools together so you can gradually learn how to remain more present, clear and balanced in everyday life.

POSITIVE ENERGY PROTECTION SERIES:

Think of the Situation as a Role You Are Choosing to Step Into

One way I work with this personally is through my role as a therapist and hypnotherapist.

Before I see a client, I set an intention for the kind of therapist I want to be.

What does being a therapist mean to me?

I want people to feel heard and understood. I want them to feel that they matter and that they’re important. I want to really listen to them and be somebody they feel comfortable around. I want us to be able to communicate in simple, easy-to-understand ways and accomplish something together.

I also imagine afterwards how good it feels when the session has gone well.

For the purposes of the session, I imagine my energy connecting with their energy on a higher-self level and allowing my intuition to guide me through each moment. I don’t have to worry about what comes next or think ahead. I can simply be in the moment and flow with what feels right — when to listen, when to talk and what words to say.

It’s amazing how well things can flow when I do this.

When I don’t take that time — when I’m rushing, have things on my mind and carry that right up until the beginning of the session — it can be much harder to connect and be fully present.

This same principle can be applied to many different areas of life.

Put On the Role Consciously

Imagine that you are putting on a role, almost like putting on an outfit before going onto a stage.

You are still completely yourself. You are simply consciously choosing how you want to show up for this particular part of your life.

Get clear about what that role means to you.

Then consciously step into it.

When you’re finished, you can take that role off, hang it back on the hook and return to yourself rather than carrying the energy of the experience into everything that comes afterwards.

That will be an important part of what we explore later in this series.

Free 1-Hour Video Consultation

If you find yourself regularly absorbing other people’s energy, feeling drained by interactions, carrying work or stressful situations home with you, or struggling to stay centred around certain people, I offer a free 1-hour video consultation. We can talk about what you’re experiencing, how it is affecting your life, explore some of the patterns or possible root causes involved, discuss your goals and my therapy process, and see whether working together feels like the right fit for you.

FREE Self-Help Mindfulness Series

Mindfulness can be particularly helpful when learning to protect your energy because it helps you become more aware of what is happening within you before, during and after interactions.

My FREE Self-Help Mindfulness Series can help you practise becoming more present so you can:

•Notice your own emotional and energetic state before an interaction

•Recognize when you are beginning to feel affected or drained

•Let go of what you were doing before moving into something new

•Become more conscious of the intentions you bring into situations

•Stay more present rather than becoming overwhelmed by thoughts

•Develop a clearer awareness of what belongs to you and what may be coming from the interaction around you

Counselling Hypnotherapy

If these patterns go deeper and you find yourself repeatedly becoming overwhelmed, drained or strongly affected by other people, counselling and hypnotherapy can help explore what may be happening underneath those reactions.

Through my work in Counselling Victoria and Hypnotherapy Victoria, I help people explore emotional patterns, subconscious responses and the ways they respond internally to challenging situations and relationships.

Learning to protect your energy isn’t about shutting yourself off from other people. It can begin with becoming clearer within yourself.

Before your next interaction, take a moment.

Clear what came before. Get present. Decide how you want to feel and what kind of person you want to be in that situation.

Set the intention, step consciously into the role, and allow yourself to be present with what comes next.
